OK I can forgive you for not knowing Rahim and Razak, but Eckstein and Lastuvka?

HammerTime78 11:35 Wed Nov 7
Re: worst ever west ham signings pound for pound
I can only assume so 5th.
No one would ever have been able to convince me those players were at West Ham before reading that list.
We've signed some shit haven't we?!

There are a lot of players signed in the Curbishley and Zola eras that I'd forgotten about too, but do vaguely remember now.

Are some of those real?

Brent Rahim?
Dieter Eckstein?
Abdul Razaq?
Jan Laštůvka?

In terms of money, Ljunberg and Dyer surely are years ahead of even Carroll... at least Carroll has given us the odd memorable moment. I don't remember Ljunberg or Dyer doing anything.

Hutchison in his second spell was awful.

Remember all of those, especially the new Rooney.

This is a fun read:

Not only did I not remember we had signed a lot of these, there are many I still don't have a clue who they are.

What are you talking about?

We got plenty of pounds when we signed Benni...

Trevor B 11:00 Wed Nov 7
Re: worst ever west ham signings pound for pound
Talking of benni.......as much as we all hate Brady she has provided at least one humorous moment during her tenure. Benni McCarthy once referred to her as "a devil with a set of tits" during an interview after she accused him of being more interested in filling his belly than filling he back of the net.

She respond "at least I'm supposed to have tits Benni, you aren't.

Re: worst ever west ham signings pound for pound
When you take everything into consideration, the fact it was the only money we had to spend at that time £2.5mil and big wages, his age, the fact he was clearly THREE STONE overweight, the precarious position we were in so the money needed to be spent wisely, he was involved in 11 games without scoring and got £1.5mil pay off, hands down it's Benni McCarthy.

With Dyer, Ljunberg, Carroll, as wasteful as they are, it's injuries that has done for them. McCarthy couldn't be bothered to go on a fucking diets.

Has to be Dyer. A cunt of a human being to boot too.

Think it was calculated that Carrol's goals cost £1.5m and rising.... quite some going that seeing how long he's been here...

Peckham 12:52 Wed Nov 7
Re: worst ever west ham signings pound for pound
Currently Caroll. But then boom when fit , does give defenders headaches and is strong , a good squad player to wear down defences. But his wages and lack of performances Jesus.

For me,in my time, has to be Dyer and Ljungberg pound for pound and expectations we had for them to shine.

Athletico Easthamico 12:51 Wed Nov 7
Re: worst ever west ham signings pound for pound
1 dyer
2 Ljungberg

Those were also the first 2 I thought of.

Re: worst ever west ham signings pound for pound
There's probably a distinction that needs to be drawn between worst and most underwhelming.

Snodgrass (who would have been on this list 6 months ago) and Fonte were the players who were supposed to lessen the blow of losing Payet. Rigobert Song and Hayden Foxe were supposed to replace Rio, to varying degrees. Gary Breen was sold to the fans as the player we beat Barcelona to, and who was going to carry us to the mythical next level. Dyer was similarly supposed to be a statement of intent, as was Ljungberg. Jimenez, as has also been mentioned, was of course the infamous final piece in the imaginary 'that's Champions League' barbecue jigsaw. I bloody hate Matt Jarvis as a player, let's get that straight, but at least he played a good few games albeit ineffectively. Had he not been touted as our 'record signing at the time...well he'd still have been shit, but maybe he wouldn't be remembered quite so badly. Boa Morte even did a job, albeit not very well, as did Diamanti.

But actually some of those players simply didn't fulfil their expectation, whilst others were genuinely awful. There is a difference, I feel. From those already mentioned, Snodgrass is showing his value now, and Ljungberg was actually decent for a while. Compared to Fonte, Dyer, Jimenez, and Foxe (even Song was, very arguably, half decent) they belong in a different category. From the current crop I would say Carroll, too - his injury record is awful and I don't argue that signing him WHEN HE WAS INJURED was a massive mistake. But he has at least proved his worth on a few occasions. Value for money? No. Worth keeping? No. But amongst the worst signings ever? No. You can play the finance game if you like and say well fee plus wages per appearance or per goal but to be honest it's not my money. I don't really care.

Dyer, McCarthy, Camara, Savio, Hugill, Charles, MINTO...those were the really shit signings in recent memory. Boogers cost next to nothing and didn't come off, you may as well talk about people like Wellington Paulista and Brian Montenegro. And Radiciuou, Dumitrescu, Suker, and Futre we all fucked before we signed them. That's on Redknapp, not the players themselves.
